Swimming the Hot Springs of Palea Kameni
The springs pool in a shallow cove where volcanic vents warm the sea and iron oxides turn it rust-orange. You swim in from the boat, the water warming with every stroke. Two practical notes from the crew: wear a dark swimsuit, because the mineral-rich water can leave a tint on light fabric, and leave the white towels on board.
Why the Stop Is Weather-Dependent
The springs sit in an exposed pocket of the caldera, so the swim happens when sea conditions allow. When the wind says no, the captain gives the time back at the calmer south-coast stops — Red Beach and White Beach — instead. We would rather be straight about that than promise a pool that the Aegean sometimes closes.
Can You Walk on the Volcano?
The crater-rim hike on Nea Kameni is a separate land excursion with its own ticket booth and paths — regular cruises admire the volcano from the water. The exception is our full-day private charter, which can dock at Nea Kameni on request so your group climbs to the craters while the BBQ is prepared on board.

Are the Santorini hot springs actually hot?
Warm rather than hot — noticeably warmer than the open Aegean, especially in the shoulder months. The pleasure is the contrast: you swim in from cool, clear water and feel the temperature climb as the cove shallows.
Will the orange water really stain my swimsuit?
It can. The warmth comes with dissolved iron and other minerals that may leave a faint tint on light-coloured fabric. A dark swimsuit swims the springs without a souvenir; the boat’s freshwater shower rinses the rest of you.
Do I need water shoes for the springs?
They help but aren’t essential. You swim to the springs rather than walk in, and most guests go barefoot; the cove’s edges are volcanic rock, so anyone planning to clamber will be glad of grippy soles.
Is the volcano safe to sail around?
Yes — Nea Kameni is continuously monitored, and the caldera is one of Greece’s busiest stretches of pleasure-boat water. The volcano’s last eruption was in 1950; today its drama is entirely visual.
Can children swim at the hot springs?
Yes, with the usual supervision — kids’ life vests are on board and the crew watches every swim stop. Small children often find the warm water the highlight of the cruise.
