Sunset from the water needs a clear western horizon and calm water to hold on — which is why good boats settle on the open caldera off the Akrotiri coast, near the 1892 lighthouse, engines off, rather than jostling beneath Oia with every other keel on the island. You still see the villages light up along the rim; you just see it without traffic.
